As a reading coach for Stranahan High in Florida, Ms. Spear developed and implemented a systematic plan for improving reading and writing throughout the school. This included a 3-day summer program that she developed to train selected teachers who, upon completion of the course, were then able to train other teachers. Ms. Spear continued to conduct content-area workshops throughout the school year to train the entire faculty. Ms. Spear’s aim was to give teachers the knowledge they needed to prepare students in reading and writing for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and a lifetime of academic success. As a result, standardized test scores in reading, writing, and math improved considerably.

Every teacher is a teacher of reading. Reading facilitates learning in all subject areas. Since "high-stakes" testing demands a higher level of thinking and analysis, students must be actively engaged in literary and informational text. To facilitate learning and assure student progress, a systematic, quality, research- based literacy program must be implemented in all content areas.
